Why study international relations? Developing an understanding of international relations is particularly important for Turkish students in an age where Turkey has engaged in world politics more than ever before. Today you need world politics if you are interested in understanding the forces at work in the world that are shaping your life and your future. In this context, the primary purpose of the course is to help you make sense of the rapidly changing world. It aims at familiarizing you with the core concepts, processes, and issues of international relations. It is designed to introduce a set of theoretical approaches and concepts by which to understand and assess complex and interdependent global trends. It identifies actors in global arena and their interaction with each other. In addition, we will cover issues such as armed conflict, terrorism, and economic relations, demographic and environmental problems that prevail on the global agenda.

Major topics include international cooperation, security and conflict, trade, and international law and human rights. By the end of the class, students will be able to critique common academic and policy arguments about global affairs and will have acquired the tools to begin their own analyses.
